The Blank Report and a Costly Honesty for Vietnamese Swimming

Late in the afternoon in Nha Trang, I opened a file with a promising title: Comprehensive Assessment of a Swimming Event. Inside, it was more than two thousand words long, but no line mentioned a specific athlete, no result, no stroke rate, no distance, no name of a competition. There were many N/A abbreviations. N/A means there is no data to evaluate. After twenty-seven years as a sports journalist, I have seen many reports short on detail. But this was the first time I saw a report clearly say that it does not know. Do not rush to call it laziness. This was an in-depth analysis report designed to answer nine groups of questions: technique, performance, competition system, global swimming landscape, governance and anti-doping, career path, risk profile, public narrative and industry ripple effects. It could not answer because it had no material. A sports journalist is often forced to say something. Before a race without numbers, many would write about atmosphere, flags and tears on the medal podium. They turn missing data into an emotional story. This report chose the opposite. It asked the right questions and left the answers blank. For a swimming analyst, having no athlete name is unusual. Having no technical data is even more unusual. How can a swimmer improve without knowing the first 50 metres, the last 50 metres, strokes per length or wall transition speed? I learned from my reporting days that races are often won at turns and touches, not in the middle. Without those numbers, every word of praise or criticism is only a feeling. A report that says this clearly is more reliable than an analysis that uses beautiful language to hide a void. The report also refused to place a result on the historical line because it had no result. It would not guess whether a swimmer was improving or declining. That honesty is more valuable than pretending to know. I went to Russia in 2026 to find answers about the presence of women in football and only found more questions. Swimming is the same. Behind the changing-room door are stories yet to be told. Some girls swim faster than the previous year but nobody records it in a table. Some good coaches have to guess because timing systems and underwater cameras are missing. In Vietnamese swimming, the lack of data is a serious bottleneck. It is not the athlete's fault. Training centres need training logs, lap times, recovery data and injury records. National competitions need detailed results for every distance, not only medal tables. Journalists need to ask more about numbers. When all of that is absent, an N/A report is not a bad product. It is a mirror of the system. I am not writing this to defend laziness. I write because an empty document can teach us more than a paper full of groundless claims. If there is no data, say there is no data. If there is not enough evidence, leave the space blank. That does not make sport less attractive. It reminds us that behind every record are thousands of quiet hours of measurement, and behind every rushed report is the price of dishonesty. The answer will come not from a writer willing to invent stories, but from a system that knows how to collect, store and apologise when something is missing. When the changing-room door opens, the voices inside will be clearer if we are willing to listen with data.
