CLB Thanh Pho Dong Nai officially debuts ahead of 2026/2027 V-League

On September 3, 2026, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) issued a reply document confirming that CLB Trường Tươi Đồng Nai had been renamed CLB Thành phố Đồng Nai, and recognized the new logo and identity for the 2026/2027 V-League season. The decision arrived only days before the season opener, after the club had won the National First Division title and sealed promotion. This is the second renaming within a year. After Bình Phước province merged into Đồng Nai province in August 2026, CLB Trường Tươi Bình Phước became CLB Trường Tươi Đồng Nai. Less than twelve months later, club leaders asked VFF to establish a clearer municipal identity. The document also states that the club bears legal responsibility for the validity of its new name and logo—a standard prerequisite but also a reminder of brand risk when administrative borders shift. The strategic twist lies in the disappearance of “Trường Tươi” from the official name. Unlike the previous renaming, this one removes the sponsor identity completely. Sports business analysts read this as a sign that the sponsorship deal with Trường Tươi may have expired or was not renewed. It also reinforces the aim of turning the club into a civic sports icon for the new city administration. If public funds arrive, the club could have a healthier financial base than most sides promoted in recent years. If not, the gap left by the sponsor must be closed before the higher wage bill and travel costs of the V-League start to bite. From a purely professional standpoint, many observers believe the gap between the First Division and the V-League remains the biggest challenge for coach Nguyễn Việt Thắng and his squad. Winning the First Division title last season was the maximum an ambitious second-tier club could achieve. Promotion, however, means facing higher pressing intensity, faster transitions and stronger individual quality in decisive moments. The playing style that brought success in the First Division cannot simply be copied in the new environment. The coaching staff must balance ball possession with defensive order, especially in the opening rounds against stronger opponents. The opening match of CLB Thành phố Đồng Nai in the 2026/2027 V-League is against CLB Thể Công - Viettel, the defending runner-up. This is arguably the harshest possible start for a promoted team. Playing at Bình Phước stadium—still the club’s home ground despite the new city label—the team will probably have to rely on defensive structure and counter-attacks against a squad with superior depth. A poor result would immediately raise questions in the media, which has already predicted that the club will face many difficulties. Those predictions are not groundless. Vietnamese football history is littered with promoted teams suffering in the early stages before adapting to the league’s tempo and quality. The two name changes in one year also create a branding risk: supporters have been asked to shift from Trường Tươi Bình Phước to Trường Tươi Đồng Nai and then to Thành phố Đồng Nai in only twelve months. Loyal fans may lose their emotional anchor, while continued use of Bình Phước stadium only widens the gap between the official administrative name and the actual matchday venue. This is a structural bottleneck the club must solve, not simply wait for local infrastructure projects. At the send-off ceremony on August 29, themed “Đồng Nai City Welcomes the V-League,” coach Nguyễn Việt Thắng struck a cautiously optimistic tone. He said: “The V-League is a different playground, full of difficulties and challenges. But with the investment of the club’s leadership, the support of Đồng Nai City, and the unity and determination of the whole team, we hope to overcome them and play matches worth watching.” The message is classic underdog communication: lowering external expectations while keeping internal ambition alive. Realistically, the objective is survival. Finishing outside the relegation zone would count as success. The political and administrative backing created by the provincial merger could be a special advantage. This club now represents a new urban region whose leaders need football to build identity and community pride. But that advantage will only matter if the dressing room stabilises, the squad is strengthened properly and the home-stadium problem is addressed. For now, the first fixture against Thể Công - Viettel will be the first test, not only for the players but also for a management team steering a club that has just changed its name and its historical direction.
